Sustainable intensification

A clearer understanding is still needed of when, where and how sustainable intensification (SI) can be successful, given the trade-offs among the sustainability, economic and productivity objectives. The answers will allow growth in productivity and production to occur with minimal negative impacts and enhancement of ecosystem services.

Key government and NGO partners will actively implement proven SI interventions and take them to scale across communities and landscapes. The use of a suite of tools developed by ILRI for measuring the sustainability of livestock development will allow both researchers and development actors to demonstrate how the intensification activities are achieving the different aspects of sustainability.

The approach covers a continuum from ex-ante analyses for system characterization, which helps prioritization and targeting of approaches and options for different systems in different contexts, through to action research on farms and within communities and landscapes for testing and validation of SI options.
